Hi, any recommendations for a Controller that works with a PC?
A chip on the controller board that came with my Sherline has fried.
I can replace the board but it's still tied to an old Linux machine
and I'm looking to see what options I have for updating the whole system.

I'd get the board fixed. That and upgrade to the latest LinuxCNC.

If that doesn't float your boat there is Mach 3 and Mach 4 not to far away.

However I'm thinking your terminology is mixed up. The PC is effectively the controller in a LinuxCNC / EMC based system. Most likely you have a driver board blown or an interface board. In their basic forms Mach and LinuxCNC are the controllers interfacing to the motor drivers.

There are other options such as KFlop that split up functionality across or between the PC and a smart controller card. If you want an all new controller you have a lot of decisions to make. Frankly there are so many options that listing all of them would be more work than I'm willing to go through right now. It might help others to respond to your post if you give us more info on why you want to do more than replace the driver.

If I'm not mistaken the factory sherline driver is pretty basic and lacks inputs for home/limit switches or spindle control. I would suggest a g540 to replace it but there are lower priced options available as well.
