    Old Lathe Back Gear

I have an old 1920 or so lathe. I don't know how to engage the back gear. It locks the spindle. Does anyone know if I have to flip another lever or maybee something is frozen. I got it home saturday and cut some aluminum with it sunday, but that backgear has me puzzeled.

    Thanks

    Kevin,
Not being fully engaged in backgear can cause a lockup, have you tried rotating the spindle as you engage the lever ?

    Hey Ken,

Yes I tried that. I just found a reference to an old lathe at practical machinist. It says I have to disengage the big gear behind the spindle from the belt pully before I engage the backgear. I will look for that when I get home.

    Thanks

Yep, you found the problem, I had forgotten about that step, the one I had you pulled out on the sleeve.
