    Combining SolidWorks and art

A few years ago an injury and the economy drastically changed my direction in life. I went from being a full time artist, to being a full time engineering consultant. However, the art genie is not an easy creature to keep in the bottle. One day while creating a part for a client in SW, I discovered how cool it would look as an abstract art piece. So I started playing with SW with the intent to create art pieces entirely in this virtual environment.

Here are a few of my favorites. I welcome your feedback, questions and comments. BTW, if you poke around CNCzone, you can find examples of my previous work.

Yes, I created the part files and assembly just as you would if you were designing a product, then rendered the files. By manipulating the appearance, lighting and camera angles I create the look I am aiming for, plus there are happy accidents that occur. It can take many hours to pull off the look, but that is were the artistic vision comes into play. Like a photographer lining up a shot, and playing with lighting, I coax the image out. The downside is that it can take a long time to render an image, as well as a lot of computing power, ie, not cheap.

Also, I am rendering with Photoview 360, part of SW Premium package.
