    x2 cnc as a shaper?

    howdy.

i got an x2 with the ballscrew kit on it, dont remember what my steppers are but theyre the long can ones? real hi torque.

i cut steel, though the slideways arent quite up to it... got some 50mm granite,2'x1'. need another 1'x1' piece off my mate to do a surface plate and scrape the thing!

    i digress.

ive been making a few cylinder heads, and im just contemplating using my parting tool, clamped to the head, and run a simple code to do the fins?

i want to get 25-30mm, at 2.5mm so an end mills out of the question.

just do a fast feed, 500 or so, to wherever, retract half mm, rapid to start, z down halfmm plus cut depth...probably only .25mm at first. rinse and repeat...

then skip over 1.5 + blade thickness for next fin

i seriously get scared doing 20mm+ plunges with a parting tool on the lathe!

plus the material i might be using is square... easier to use a "shaper" in my opinion.

yeah, if i had the quantity id buy an actual shaper!

    any opinions?

    heres one i made earlier

    Attachment 194012

this was only 76mm, next time it will be either 101 round or 100 square... and 50mm deep, not 30. all i had on hand at the time!

A slitting saw would be WAY faster....

Yeah a saw is the way. You'll probably find the proposed method will throw up more problems than the parting tool in the lathe.

i started thinking like that myself... was thrown by my inadequate 40mm slitting saws on hand.

set rotary as... C? vertical feed saw in on x, rotate for round,

simple clamp and Y passes for flat.... yeah. easy peasy.

i need an 80-100 mm slotsaw

i need to make a phone call and get this 600mm Hbeam for my trough/stand so i stop making a mess! and can run coolant. grrrr.

    cheers

right. two 100x2.5 saws on their way.

gunna gang em up on a toolpost grinder spindle, and run the blanks on the big lathe in low gear. if this works, ill run 8 of them, with 2.5mm spacers.

good excuse to get these spindles cleaned up and running anyway
