    liquid paint masking

I was wondering if any one uses liquid paint masking, and does it work for routing out text in wood and keep the surface from getting paint on it when you paint the text. and does it ball up the router bit. I want to paint text in a board, with the surface stained but use a white for the engraved text or shape in the wood but dont want any paint on the surface so i will have a clean looking engraving. No one is doing any router engraving in my neck of the woods, they all use laser engraving now and they dont even know what liquid mask is let alone making wooden engraving. when I find some thing like it called Frisk, its 10-12 dollars for a few oz. at the hobby store (wow).thats high.has any one tried this.

Try finishing the wood what ever way you want it to look, then a couple of coats of clear (I use Deft) making sure to use 0000 steel wool after every coat. ( make it smooth)

Next router your text and as lightly as you can color your text. After dried use the steel wool again to remove extra paint.

I use a similar technique to produce this.

Here is the process I have been using.
    1. Apply clear lacquer or shellac to top surface
    2. Apply contact shelf paper
    3. Route normally
    4. Paint
    5. Remove paper
    Painting is easiest part.

I will try that, you have done a very good job on the engraving, My question is what is the contact paper used for. and do you free hand your router or is it with a cnc. either way its very pretty...

The sample was done with a cnc router.

what do you use the contact paper used for and do you apply it before you mill you engraving.I tried tape over my surface before engraving but it would ball up on my bit and tear out most of the tape.perhaps the contact paper will not do that.

The paper is applied before engraving.
I use a 60 degree bit for fine details. Have not had any problems with cutting cleanly through the paper.
