    Stepper locking up

    Hi,
Recently I've started having problems with my Y axis locking up.
I went thru the mill, Taig CNC ready, and couldn't find anything. Everything works smooth and easy.
I noticed when I got the stepper that a few times it locked up while turning it by hand. I put it on the mill and didn't experience any problems so thought nothing of it.
Now, almost a year later, it's locking up and loosing steps. I've tried slowing the feed rate and lowering the accell rate but it still locks up.
I feel there is something in it like a metal particle or something.
I know they're cheap and replacing one will not break the bank but it will delay me getting this order out by the amount of time it takes to get one shipped to me.
What is the danger of opening up a stepper? Can I take off one end to check for trash?

    Thanks

    James

yes, but dont pull the rotor out, or it will likely self demagnetize

I apologize for putting this in the wrong forum. Should have been steppers.. not servos.
