Need help understanding stepper motor wiring!

Hello. I am refurbishing a broken new hermes 3200 machine. I am replacing all the motors but am having trouble understanding how to read the wires. I have this motor

    I have this driver https://www.circuitspecialists.com/s...ler-cw250.html

I also got a stepper pulse generator I am currently using to test these motors and get them working. Then I will move it over to my breakout board.

I have looked everywhere to try and understand stepper motor wiring, and how to hook it up. I hooked it up last night to what I thought was might be the right configuration. I thought I heard my motor briefly move but I couldn't do it again. I felt it though and it was extremely hot. I looked at this

I couldn't understand though what it meant. I looked at this site

Wiring Connection Diagrams | Lead Wire | Stepper Motors | Lin Engineering

It gave a lot of useful information but I am not sure if it applies to this particular motor. I tried following the instructions for the bipolar drive series connection under 6 wire. That's when it got hot. On the stepper motor pules generator I got a sheet that identifies the connectors. I don't have a picture of that now unfortunately. I can get it later if it will be of assistance. I have looked all over the internet to try and understand the motor wiring's but I couldn't understand the different diagrams. Any assistance on what wires are needed, and where to put them would be greatly appreciated.

Only thing I see is that your motors are .65 amp, and that driver goes only as low as 1.5amp, could possibly have to do with your heating issue.

    Just a thought.

Does the motor draw just what it needs or is it possible to use too much current and blow it out?

the driver needs to be set via dip switches to set the current, however its lowest setting is way above the needs of that motor and yes you can burn out the motor, melt the insulation fry that puppy down.

Thank you! Good thing I got extra motors. I have some lower current power supplies I will try. Do you know how I can figure out what wires are what on the motor for the a a- b b-.

Here's a little light reading for you. It's important to match the driver with the motor, the first link talks about correcting a mis-match. The second link gives a run down of wiring, and the third is just good to know info for matching loads to you motors once you get the other stuff figured out.......

Thank you very much. I appreciate your help and that made things a lot more clear for me. I will try a smaller power supply. The only other question I have is with the pulse generator. On it, it has one slot for direction and one for pulse (among others but those are the ones I am concerned about). On that driver it has cp +, cp - ,cw +, and cw-. I know those are for direction and pulse. but I am not sure if I have to hook up both those wires to the generator, or if for testing purposes I can just hook up one to get it to work. I imagine if I hook up one it would only spin one way? Thank you for being patient. Once I figure out the wiring I can start installing the motors. Also, what size gauge wire would you reccomend? I am using 18 and 22 at the moment. Is solid or stranded better? I have lots of different sizes of wire lying around. Is it bad if I use different size wiring on the drivers and such to connect them to the stepper motors. For the power supply and any wire with current I have a 18 gauge solid I am thinking should be used. I just am not sure about the rest of the wires for signal.
