Here is what the seller claims: Hypertherm Powermax 1000 plasma cutter, was bought new in 2007 and was lightly used from that time but recently developed a problem, it begins to cut well for a while and then stops cutting and only sparks but does not cut and you let it cool down and it works for a bit again, i bought a new machine and don't have time to mess with this one.

How much to fix this system? Is it worth $300?

It is worth $300 easily. I would have to ask a bunch more questions to get closer to the problem. As you state it...there could be a sticking plunger or an arced out plunger in the torch. Could be a worn out swirl ring or retaining cap. Could be a sticking air solenoid valve. Could be a loose wire connection.
