How to hold Pinion wire for turning

    Hi,

Im fairly new to the forum but have a little experience with home machining. I have about a foot of 64pitch 8 tooth brass pinion wire that i need to turn down to make some tiny spur gears. Is there a correct way to hold pinion wire in a lathe without damaging the stock?

    thanks
    Phil

Standard lathe collets are all I've ever used.

I guess i was worried because you are only gripping on the ends of the teeth and thought it would damage the brass in a collet. I will give it a go!!
I was half expecting some kind of custom collet which had been EDM'd to the profile of the wire!!

Thanks for taking the time to answer

Thanks for the info!! I was just concerned with damaging it, because of it size and the fact that it will only be gripping at the tips of the teeth.
