Anyone have tricks on removing a stuck motor pulley? The shaft on my mill motor has a keyed slot and retaining ring. As I try to pull off the pulley I believe that it is getting stuck on the sharp edge of the retaining ring grove. Would trying to heat up only the pulley with a mapp gas torch help? Other suggestions?

Use a puller. And maybe some Plus Gas.

Tried grinding the jaws of a cheap Harbor Freight puller to fit but it just kept slipping out. My feeling is I'll have to keep modding the puller until it just works.

I have used a propane torch to heat and expand the pulley.

Take a small round file and run it lightly around the snap ring groove. This will slightly bevel the edges so the pulley can't catch. Dont go very heavy so the snap ring still has square shoulders to seat on.

Heating up the pulley did help and I was able to get the jaws of the puller underneath the pulley. However, the pulley is really stuck now. I should have beveled the snap ring grove as suggested but too late since I chipped a tooth off the pulley with the puller.

Worried about damaging my motor so I just decided to get another pulley for $17. Will end up Dremeling off the old pulley.
