    Climate Control and Tormach

    All,

I am considering the purchase and wanted input advise on climate control is it an absolute necessary. I live near Houston, TX and my shop is of course my converted garage no A/C. Am I going to cause permanent damage to the machine by using it prior to having A/C install to maintain a constant temperature?

Thanks for the time and advise...

    Regards,

    Jon

If the humidity is high, I would consider it for that condition.
Personally I have AC, keeps the rust under control, also it is nice on those mid 90 degree days.......

With the high humidity here I have A/C and a dehumidifier for the summer and heat for winter. Always have it in the 68-72 deg range.

Keep it dry and keep the rate of temperature change low. High humidity and cold iron is a recipe for rust. Air temperature (and humidity) can increase a lot faster than a half-ton of steel-it's the lag that'll get you. Dehumidify at least, consider high R-value insulation as well.

But don't forget that protecting your investment is a great reason to have a comfortable shop!

Not an absolute necessity-- I use a Tormach in a mostly unheated/un-cooled garage in TX and while it's not pristine, it does ok with a bit of care.

You and the machine will be a lot happier with AC however

AC would be nice for a few days in the summer time. A really hot day here is in the low to mid 80's. In the winter, a REALLY cold day is in the mid to high 50's, but we are only about a mile from the Pacific Ocean.

No, it's not needed. My shop goes from 50 deg in the winter to 90+ in the summer. Sure, condensation can cause rust. So does flood coolant. Use a rag and some WD-40, keep your machine clean.
