Finishing a semicircular shaped (bottom half of a cylinder)

    Hello!

I'd have to mill a part as described in the title. I'm using linear moves with 0.1mm stepover instead of circular moves for milling time reasons.

My problem now is as long as the ball mill works along the steep sides of the shape the stepover of 0.1 mm (in topview) gives pretty large steps in z direction of about 1mm or more until it reaches the more flat areas of the shape.

Can I somehow refine this without having to set the stepover to 0.05mm or less ? How or where to define in CAMWORKS the angle of steepness for creating smaller steps in stepover ?

    Thanks in advance

    Richard

Try using Constant Step-Over instead of Slice. You can control the xy step-over as well as the z.

If it was half a cylinder then slice should be fine, you may need to change your direction so you are cutting across rather than along the cylinder....

@extanker59 : Thanks, this is exactly what I'm looking for !

@jame5m28 : I wanted to do this but my boss said no. Would need more milling time and too many z-axis moves in a short time might overload the machine . Weird !

Thanks to both of you for your help !

    You're welcome.
I often use various methods when 3D milling. Constant step over was one of the first that I was shown and used. Very useful in your situation I think.

One that came late to me is Flowline. I really like Flowline on the radiused outside perimeters of parts as it doesn't leave cross lines. I will often use Fine/Slice for the inside mostly flat portions then switch over to Flowline for the outer portions.

    Good luck
