    DIY benchtop mill build

    Hello!

Just wanted to share my build project It's my own design and will be mainly used to mill aluminum and MDF molds. More specs found on gallery comments. Feel free to ask if you have any questions

Here's the link to my Picasa-gallery:

VERY nice! By far the best ground-up build I've seen here!

    Regards,

Works fine for me. Could be a temporary problem with your ISP...

That vmc is used on nearby vocational school where the teacher and few students did frame machinings among their lessons

Still someone having problems with that picasa link? I don't get it, the gallery should be public and visible for everybody without google login.

    Looking nice!

The column is steel tubing but what is the base? It looks like the base is welded up out of solid bar stock.

One other question why the bed mill design instead of a router type approach?

If you look at his album he's already built one of those.

Cool. Stands are so much more work than you first expect right? I love to see people doing analysis before they really get into the build. It's so useful to see how small changes can make sure a big difference in deflection or dampening. Keep up the good work. What do you think of the Leadshine servo-steppers so far? I'm incorporating them into a lathe but I haven't got anything wired yet. I'm curious to know how the perform.

Machine looks awesome! I only have one comment to make regarding the design and you may have already thought about it.

Your Z Axis, is on linear rails, and the ball screw is direct driven. Is there enough weight there to free spin the motor and screw when there is no power applied?
I initially had that issue with my machine after I first built it. When I powered the system off, the weight of the head would spin the ball screw and the head would come on down.

Nice work! I like the solution you came up with for the base of the machine by using two pieces of box tubing welded to together--hadn't thought of that. I have started a scratch build design of my own and it looks very similar to what you have. Thanks for sharing!

I've done just initial tests without no load but so far they feels really good. Super smooth (and quiet) performance and lots of torque!

I will put a 200N gas strut to lighten up the z-axis. I think the motor would have enough power to move it without counterweight but unpowered z-axis would come down.

Made first moves with X and Y axis
I set rapids about to 7m/min. I also tested how fast this thing is and I got 20m/min speeds without losing any steps!

Very nice. Quick too. One month from CAD to having the XY working. Impressive.

Actually it's taken now 11 months from CAD to this point.
