    Initial setup of used tormach?

I've got my used 1100 sitting in my garage.

I had to remove the Y and Z steppers to get it here. According to the manual I need to run each axis with the steppers a bit loose so that they center then tighten them up.

It was never used with coolant so there is cutting oil everywhere, plus lots of plastic shavings - it was used mainly to cut plastics when used at all, so I have that mess to clean up.

I need to reassemble the sheetmetal "wings" with silicone.

I need to do a basic levelling (the manual says not too important)

What other basic setup steps or checks should I do prior to use?

    TIA.
    Ken

If you have the power drawbar I'd suggest going through the "calibration" procedure.

    No drawbar unfortunately.

Should the machine to base studs/nuts be tightened down to a specific torque or just snug?

I did not take my machine off the stand to transport it, but the stand assembly instructions do not specify a specific torque. They just say to start the bolts but to wait until you verify alignment before tightening them.

I didn't tighten the nuts on the stand on my machine. I just ran them down until they were finger tight then I adjusted the feet on the stand to level the machine. It's been like that for almost 3 years and it works just fine.
You can buy GOOD PARTS or you can buy CHEAP PARTS, but you can't buy GOOD CHEAP PARTS.

You probably want to check the tram of the head with an indicator on the machine table. Mine ran out a mile and that's when I found out I had loose gibs and a crooked head. (The machine's as well as mine...LOL) With a LOT of prying and tweaking, I got it from .012" over a 7" diameter to around .001"

I hope the previous owner of your machine didn't hammer it like mine.

    Hi steve,
Is this to avoid tension on the machine base casting?
Do you think this might effect the precision of the machine?
I was thinking rigidity when I tightened everything down, didn't consider tram or other problems it could cause.
    Would you loosen them now?

Some of the oil I bet you see is the way lube, my machine pools way oil under x & y axis and back Y axis way cover below z axis.
I don't mind I figure it is well lubricated.

Leveling is about as much of an issue as it is for a knee mill, supported at all 4 corners, and so it drains.
Clean it make sure the lube system is working right
use a good silicon like black stuff on the base and don't be stingy.
That's pretty much it unless it was abused, it should work fine.
