I got a very basic doubt

We have got a 24V DC motor which is controlled by a PCB, as PCB is not working, we have connected a SMPS of 24VDC and this is connected to Motor through a Potentiometer and a resitor of 10 ohms 30 Watt

Pl let us know what should be the value of resistor (both resistance and wattage) conected at the output of Potentiometer of 5 Kilohms and 7.5 W

Pl let us know how to exactly caluculate value of resistance and POtentimeter (both resistance and wattage) to drop 24V DC from SMPS to feed 24V DC Motor because we have following problems :

a) Sometimes potentiometer getting heated up and fails

b) With some resistor, voltage drops completely and motor can not move at all

c) With some potentiometer, at a point v r getting 24V DC, when we slighly rotate the potentiometer, voltage drops to 2 V ie v r unable to control speed of motor as v r not able to set potentimeter to achieve any desired voltage between 0 to 24VDC by rotating potentiometer

Actually this is for a welding application to control speed of wire feed motor, in one setting speed of motor ok, voltage is also just varying between 10 to 12VDC for motor but current we are not able to control from Power source
