    Y axis tramming question

    Hi All,
I found a thread of Ray's on making your own tramming tool which I did (Thanks Ray). I think I did everything right, and the x-axis seems good /repeatable. Adjusting X is obviously easy with the head bolts, but how do I adjust the Y ?. I've seen some threads about shims under the base etc, but would like a "reality check" before I do anything with the Y. The X was out about .010 over 10 inches (my hole to hole distance on the indicators). Y looks about the same.

    Thanks in advance.

    Matt,

Tramming Y requires loosening the bolts holding the column to the base, and slipping in shims.

    Regards,

In the diagrams of the Torus Pro it looks like the bottom piece of the column has screws coming from both the bottom and the top. If that's the case, should we loosen and shim the top part of the column?

My Y seems to be very close to trammed, so I thankfully haven't had to mess with it yet.

After further testing, I was wrong on the Y. It is only .0005 out. So I ran my new Shars 2.5" face mill across a 2"x6"x5" block of 6061 and it looks very good. I have to try really hard to "feel" any transition in the step over in the facing passes. Very happy with the result.
