Not sure where this goes- trying to set up laptop to punch programs

I'm running geoprep/xtpro/millwrite on windows 7 "dos" in compatibility mode. every time I try to punch a program through geoprep an error reads 'cannot open com1 port" and gives me an option to stop the program or ignore.

i'm not really sure what the issue is. i doubt it's the program, because it's in compatibility mode and runs the programs through the same command prompt as the other computers... I think something is either wrong with the cord (usb to female 25-pin/M-M adapter), or my settings. however I can't find anywhere where i can edit com

if you could help me get set up i'd really appreciate it. i'm also open to new ideas on how to upload, edit, and punch programs.
