Hi All, New to the forum, but have a JQ1290 80W laser machine. Have had is since November 2013 and was bought second hand. In good condition and works very well indeed for what I use it for. Anyway, today as I was using it cutting some 3mm MDF as normal and all of a sudden it started to loose power from the 80% that I was using as per normal and now just indicates 5% power on the mAh meter on the top of the machine even though the program is set at 80%. Mirrors and lens are clean and water is running perfectly through the chiller unit.


Any ideas. is it the laser tube or the laser power supply?

It is unfortunate that all lasers don't have hour meters on them. My guess would be that the tube is bad. There is a remote chance that the high-voltage connector between the tube and high-voltage power supply is bad, but then the current would probably fluctuate. The inside of mine was burnt to a crisp. :-( High-voltage probes, 40 kV are available at what I consider a moderate price at eBay.

Looks like tube. But only looks.
You may check you laser power supply imiedietly if you do not afraid elekticity :- D
Turn machine off and wait half an hour.
Than mount unisolated (5-10mm) Ground cable side by side with unisolated Anode (red) cable that normally feeds your laser tube.
About 30mm one from another.
Take care when you strip isolation wrapped around laser anode input. It is metal-in-glass and very fragile.
Set those cables on a piece of wood isolated from machine body and far from any human.
Than set your laser machine to 100% power and about 1-1.5 second time.
Move away more than 1 meter off those cables and fire laser.
You should see pefect, strong and stable arc welding both wires.
If there is no arc or arc is not strong and stable than you may change you PSU.

I would set cables some higher from wood to avoid wood burning.
Wood burning flames may looks like an false arc.
Most important is an pure and stable arc that melts ends of wires.
This shows real PSU power.

Like people here talked, sounds like the problem is PSU.
You can take the machine power plug off the power strip .Adjust the current of PSU a little bigger (by the hole on PSU in clockwise).
Or change a new power supply directly.Bes the shipping fees to fix is worth buy a new .
Once one of our customer fixed by change a new PSU.
When is the tube produced ? you can check the label in the tube middle .If it has more than 9 months or you had it 1/2 year ,you should consider buy a new tube as well. You know,save some freight fees.
