Y axis moves randomly in a direction

I have DIY mach3 running cnc for 3 years with no problems - until now:

when I want to move the Y axis (left or right) with the keybord (arrow up/down) it moves randomly in a direction.
The same when I use the home button on the mach screen it moves randomly in a direction - mostly the wrong one.
when I press the same keybord arrow twice (or more) the Y axis moves randomly
    Z an X work fine.

I checked the hardware, limiting switches, cables, connectors, even swapped motor drives - no luck

    Any idea how to solve?
can it be mach3 is causing it?

I would check your direction pins from the computer to the breakout board/drivers.
It sounds like wiring or pin problems, making intermittent contact.
you could measure the voltage at the direction pin on the driver and see if that is the case.

    Fixed it.
Cable connector had loose connections (some time ok, moment later no connection) - so I did not know where it was and in what direction to go
