    ABS chip clearing

I recently got a small benchtop cnc for the sole purpose of milling ABS. I got a dust collector boot; however, ABS doesn't lend itself very well to woodworking-type dust collection. Is there an alternative? What do most commercial shop do about this? It seems an option to just build a cabinet for it and let' er rip, then vacuum up after each run. Would a strong fan inside a cabinet work? Any ideas appreciated.

Hi , not a specialist at ABS but would are compressed air nozzle in conjunction with a vacuum work? Just a thought maybe if you blow the chips in the direction of the vacuum it would clear it out better , as I said just my $ 0.02

    Re: ABS chip clearing

I use a high CFM delta fan mounted right in front of my spindle perpendicular to the bed (so it looks like it's standing straight up basically) - its a 120x38mm 3amp fan i got for a couple bucks off ebay, goes to some 4000rpm but the atttractive part of it is that it pushes over 250cfm from a relatively small package - and the pattern of air it pushes out is such that having it abou an inch in front of my spindle, and the bottom part of the fan is level with the top of the cutter, the air that comes out does not go straight back through it like one would think, but rather flowers out to all sides very early in its path out the back - which conveniently puts quite a strong wind blowing right at the cutter. it clears out acrylic chips no problem for me, and im not using fast rates by any means so there is occasional melting and it seems to do the job fine - if thats not enough i imagine if you could focus the air out the back of a fan like that or one of comparable CFM output, into an area an inch or two in diameter, that it would be very good at removing your buildup with relatively low noise level.

I dont have a sound meter but at full power it sounds slightly louder than my microwave.

Worth a shot if you got an old computer fan lying around with anything more than a 1.0 amp power rating should at least get you pointed in the right direction if this is something that could work for you or not, up to you to try - do post your results though if you have success with it, i'm curious to see
