Yes. They can be one and the same. Add your switches for the home positions and then use the soft limits within Mach3 if you don't want to put limit switches at the other end of the travel on each axis.
You can put one switch in the middle of the axis and triggers at the ends and have one switch to be your home and limits also.

It really depends on the accuracy you require. You could run each axis against its physical stop, hit ref all. This would be a pretty repeatable location only varying by a partial rotation of the stepper. From there you could choose a location for your G28. Test it with an indicator, see just how close it really is, repeatably.

I ordered switches. The travel on this thing makes me somewhat nervous anyway without a failsafe.

Switches are the way to go. Fail safe might not be the word I would use. More predictable maybe.
