    CRP4848 Nema 34 Build

Well my JoesCNC2006 is gone. Picked up and moved to its new home this morning.

Sent off an email CNC Routerparts for CRP4848 with pro rack instead of the normal rack and clamps setup.

We will be getting that paid for hopefully as soon as tomarrow.

Here is the planned table, built out of timberstrand lumber. For those that don't know what timberstrand is, think OSB lumber. Meaning very stable, little expansion contraction. Basically Dimensionally perfect and straight lumber.

Well bought 136 pounds of Timber Strand lumber, essentially OSB lumber, for the table. Thats 8 12ft peiced of 2x4.

Very stable, little to zero expansion contract, and near perfect dimensionality.

Just looking at the frame, I'd suggest skinning the sides with plywood or beefing up your gussets. That gantry is pretty massive, and all the accelerations and decelerations put some racking loads in the front to back direction.

That is always an option vbgraves. There is a frame down the middle, and with the plywood on top and that frame should resist racking pretty good. Can always change it

    Re: CRP4848 Nema 34 Build

So it took awhile but we now have a 60amp subpanel in the garage, and enough power to run my new cncrouter. We started assembly and I want to paint the non-mating, non-precision surfaces of the steel rail and rack. I know from emailing Ahren that the powdercoat on the parts is Cardinal RD02 Red. Does anyone know what the closest spray paint that matches that is?

No one has any tips on the red spray paint?

Meanwhile catching up on some assembly pictures.

Picture one is the table frame itself, at this stage it was still able to twist around a vertical axis.
Picture two is the table with its plywood top on, at this point pushing on one corner results in zero deflection, and will just spin the table around in place.
Picture three is the start of assembly of the machine table itself. So many t-nuts and regular nuts. Much loctite used so far!

    Hi Nick,

Base is looking great! Cardinal sells a spray paint version of the RD-02. I think it's about $8 / bottle. You can find a local dealer here:

    Cardinal Paint: Contact Cardinal

You don't really need to use loctite on most of the extrusion connections, as the drop angles on the extrusion serve as a locking feature. You do want to use loctite on the rack and pinion motor pulleys when you get to these, but otherwise it's not really needed.

    Best regards,

Got an email quote from Cardinal in Vancouver Washington. They want $20 for a can of matching spray paint!! I think I may go with a different color, or just find a close match at Ace Hardware.

As far as loctite on all the nuts/bolts, I am a belt and suspenders kind of guy. I don't want anything coming loose.

So finally unboxed the rails and rack, and found that I had received the standard rack units instead of the ordered PRO style racks.

Got on the phone with Cory at CRP and the correct PRO rack units will be shipping out tomarrow.

    Progress!!

After painting the rails last night, we have them and the main gantry beam bolted to the machine! And most importantly, the carriages all hit the bumpers at the front of the machine at the same time! So it looks like it is pretty square.

I will get a better picture tonight, the sunlight outside was causing my camera to take dark pictures.

    Re: CRP4848 Nema 34 Build

I took one of the risers down to Ace Hardware, and found a rustoleum gloss paint that is nearly a perfect match. $5 a can, and used one can so far. May need one more to paint the non rack part of the gear rack.

My risers are bolted down so I'm not able to bring them along, do you recall the exact color???

I do not, unbolt one of the bumper mounts.

LOL. I made my own and painted them black! Looks like a reconnaissance mission to Ace is on tap for later!

    Re: CRP4848 Nema 34 Build

So as part of building the machine, we are adding more power to the garage/shop area. Part of that is a 20amp 220v circuit for the air compressor, and eventually a real spindle for the cnc router. I have been having problems figuring out the wiring for the spindle VFD. I think I only need Red/Black/Ground for the VFD is that correct?

    Yes, that should be correct.
