Noisy Hardinge Bridgeport Y Axis Ball Screw

    Hi,

My Hardinge Bridgeport VMC ball screw Y Axis has been making a loud noise for at least a year now especially when rapidly traversing in the Y Axis. I know I should have maybe investigated sooner but the machine is cutting absolutely fine but thought I would look into it now. The CNC engineer says the ball screw needs replacing but I am wondering if it's just the gease not getting to the Y Axis ball screw. I have since taken off the Y Axis way cover to have a look at the ball screw myself. It looks shiny and when I feel the ball screw I can not feel any grease at all on it. Would it be safe for me to wipe some geese along the ball screw to see if this will stop the loud noise?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

...could be support bearings or maybe electronic sound on the Drive side of things.

When you say electric sound do you mean the Y Axis motor noise?

...there are a set of Bearings in the motor too...come to think of it....when someone says its the ball screw making the noise...ASSUME NOTHING is my point... there are many things that could be making the noise..I would start with remove motor from ball screw and test at top speed.
