    2000 HAAS VF0 & 2000 VF2 RS232 Connection

    Hello Everyone,

I've been digging around the forums for a week how to connect both my year 2000 HAAS' via RS232 to my PC and/or serial server without any luck. The only way it will work is if I directly connect a short cable about 6ft from the CNC mill to my laptop. I've made and tested multiple long cables about 50 ft+ using ethernet and low capacity from RYM using standard HAAS pinouts with the same outcome, mostly rs232 abort errors and once in a great while no errors. I'm using all common configurations I found on this forum. Currently using Windows 7 pro, but I've also read that older HAAS may need Windows XP with the Xmodem protocol? Does anyone have any experience with older HAAS' and rs232/DNC connection? If this is the case I try to dig around for some old XP images and see if it works.

    Thanks,
    Bee

Have you disabled the FIFO buffers on the COM port in Control Panel?

What do you have the machine RS232 settings set at? Specically, what baud rate are you trying to send at when running the 50+' cables?

I tried 9600 baud rate, I even tried 1200, 2400, and 7200, only 38400 works with a short cable. I've been mining the forums looking for rs232 serial configuration for HAAS and they all look pretty similiar.

I think you need to start from the beginning. It is more than just baud rate. There are stop bits, handshake, parity, etc. You must set the computer and the Haas exactly the same for it to work. What actual program are you using to send and receive on the computer?

I know its not only baud rate, as I stated earlier it works with the short cable. Configurations are exactly the same. I've configured alot of different types of serial devices before at the Google, VMware, and Apple data centers but nothing related to CNC and/or HAAS. I tried both shielded and un-shielded long cables with HAAS pinouts.

Laptop >> short cable >> Haas CNC = Works

Laptop >> long cable >> Haas CNC = rs232 abort error & sometimes work

Laptop >> serial server >> short cable (same short cable) >> Haas CNC = rs232 abort error

I'm sending NC files, I tried both short and long files.

What serial server at what settings? Check the long cable for bad connections and such. You are scrimping on details and causing extra posts.
