As far I know, tool changer is the fundamental difference!
Correct me if I’m wrong.

The “W” has a “sliding” head from vertical to horizontal machining.
The “S” has an automatic “swivel” head, often together with a C-axis in vertical circular table construction.
Information is to the best of my knowledge!
I’ve never seen 1600th with a sliding head. I believe it’s not ergonomic because of head weight and encapsulation…
For this reason:
1600 W = fixed table + swivel head
1600 S = circular table + swivel head
I saw 1600W in November 08 in Austria. Any more questions?
And the sliding head is even automatic, if not program-controlled. I hope picture attachment works.
No questions. Because it’s not a sliding head in the picture, but a swivel head. The vertical head rotates automatically up with its turning axis sitting on 45°, so that the horizontal head is uncovered. In case of machines with tool change it’s changed in both axes.I saw 1600W in November 08 in Austria. Any more questions?

A covering cup is set on the spindle during head rotation.
Why do I know this? Because we have three of those machines
