Re: BT30 spindle built from scratch, with ATC possibility.

    That's awesome man! Good luck!

Time for another update! A colleague helped me in the CNC-grinder. Grinding the spindle housing, outside and the front bearing seat is now done. Will grind the back bearing seat hopefully next weekend.

    Doing some test fitting.

Now it's time to grind the spacer-rings to the correct size, not today tho.

    Attachment 247744

So I did some run-out testing(without the roller bearing), the run-out on the back bearing seat was around 0.02mm, and the run-out 200mm away from the tool taper was 0.02mm. Note that I didn't adjust the run-out in the AC-bearings when testing it today, when I do the final assembly I should be able to get lesser run-out on the back bearing seat and therefore lesser run-out on the tool taper. I'm still aiming for a maximum run-out of 0.01mm, 200mm away from the taper.

    Here's a video showing the run-out testing.

Still a lot of work left, but I'm getting closer to a finished spindle!

Made myself a hook spanner for the KMT nuts.

Me and a colleague were gonna grind the back bearing seat after work yesterday but the belt to the spindle weared out, so were grinding it next week instead.

Drilled and tapped some holes on front of the spindle housing.

    Looks gorgeous imo!

Need to get the roller bearing on there ASAP! :P

    Thanks man!

Me and a colleague ground the back bearing seat on the spindle housing yesterday. The housing is now complete.

I also ground the spacer ring to tolerance, which sits below the roller bearing.

I might do some test assembling today, we'll see.

Made a keyway groove in the spindle today.

Another test assembly today, might be one of the last test assemblies before the finished spindle! All that's left for the rotating parts is the labyrinth seal above the roller bearing, might start with that next week.

Here's a vid showing me measuring some run-outs or the spindle.

Lathed the labyrinth seal for the roller bearing yesterday. They're made of Uddeholm Stavax for it's rust-resistant properties, will be hardened to 52HRC for extra stiffness.

I also bored 6 holes in the outer ring, but no pics of that.

If everything goes as planned, I'll have them back before next weekend.

    Hi dear Mr3D,

    sorry for my poor english,

I see your very interesting work on youtube and after some search find your post here. dear Mr3D I want to build a spindle like yours but as my English is not good I can't find the proper information and plan, could I ask you to help me to find the plan and cad file of this spindle?

    Thank you so much
    Regards

Re: BT30 spindle built from scratch, with ATC possibility.

Hey man, thanks for being interested in my spindle!

The design isn't something I found on the net, it's my own design. Tho, I won't release the 3D-files, I've already published a section view of the design(first pic of this thread). If I were to make another spindle right now I would make some design changes to the gripper, beside that nothing major. Maybe make it slightly longer(tho I can't manufacture a spindle shaft longer than what it is now.)

If you want to make your own, you have to make your own 3D model, but looking at my section view should make that kinda easy, when you design your own spindle, you could take into account the machines that you have access too, that's what I did. Good luck with the spindle build, man! When you make a build thread, share a link here.

On another spindle-work-related note, I thought the labyrinth seal for the roller bearing would get back from hardening before today, but it didn't. I won't have time next weekend so there's another 2 weeks before next update... :drowning:

Thank you so much dear Mr3D for your replying.

It's hard for me to design my own, I'm completely newbie in designing and these day I trying to follow some step by step guide to build my own machine like: CNC lathe and CNC router.

so if there is any way for me to take your design in detail (buying it) you already have my email, let me know.

    your spindle is absoloutly interesting.

Thank you so much again for replying

Re: BT30 spindle built from scratch, with ATC possibility.

If you want to build a router you have to make your own CAD model, so drawing a spindle shouldn't be hard. In fact basically the spindle design is just a profile revolved around an axis, easy to make even for a beginner.

Thanks for your offer, but the 3D-model isn't for sale.

I think this thread should be a great start for your build. I vote for trial and error tho, that's the best way of learning stuff, the best thing about a project isn't the result, it's about the road there.

Tho, if you have some questions about some of the design choices I made, feel free to ask them! E.g. why I did this instead of that.

Wubian Look at grabcad maybe someone sell you drawing but m3d is right the road is as important as the result ,.. I also adjust an iso30 spindle for toolchanger ,..

    Hi Mr3D,

I tried to contact you via PM with some questions about my ATC spindle design, but it says that you have blocked PM messages. Could you please contact me?

    Thanks a lot!

Fabulous work you have done there.

I would be happy to get my home made spindle up to the quality of the first one you made.
