Does tool life vary with interrupted cuts to continuous cuts

We run a production job with volumes of 10000-15000 per month( Turning job ). Cast iron machining. We are getting a tool life of 40 parts per edge. I was wondering if intermittent cut on the job has consequences on my tool life. Also does improper work holding affect tool life.

Vastly affect tool life, you need to speak to your tooling supplier rep and get the appropriate grade and geometry for intermittent cutting. You need to hold your component properly also as that has a large influence on tool life and also surface finish and repeat ability of your part.

What ianglover said x2. Also, if you can you are better off to use a tough grade to get through the interrupted cut, then come back with a higher productivity grade and fly through it.

Haha.. I am that kinda person even if I know that it is the most likely answer, I would like to hear it from experienced folks.. It's annoying for others, but that's okay.. I am at peace to have known it from people with exp. Also with the skill level around me.. I can't ask ppl where I work. They are like champions for misguiding and they take you for a ride if you are edgy..
