Arrow 1000 only one spindle drive key?

My company just got a used year 2000ish Cincinnati Arrow 1000 VMC with the 2100 control. In th process of getting it up and running, and one thing that I cant understand is why there is only one spindle drive key? There is two cutouts for drive keys but only one of them has a key and the other doesn't even have a tapped hole for adding one. It looks just like this one in the link below. My question is why they would make a machine that only has one drive key. Anyone know?

This is how they were all made. Make sure when you load tools in the carrousel that the dimple on the side of the toolholder is opposite the drive key on the spindle.

Under normal conditions it's the taper fit of the tool and the spindle that drives the tool

Wouldn't this be bad for any kind of heavy milling? What was the idea behind having only one key?

If you look at the way the machine changes tools, the extra drive key would hit the inside of the tool drum. The arrow machine does not have the power at the spindle to require two keys. It is only a 40 taper, a 50 or 45 taper spindle needs two keys because of more H.P. I agree that the spindle would seem to be better balanced with two keys, especially at higher speeds.

Most machines that use one key, use BT tool holders, so make sure it does uses Cat tooling, it could well be a BT spindle

This machine should have the standard 40 taper Cat tooling. Cinci did not make any of the Arrow 1000 machines with BT tooling that I have ever seen in the field.
