    Preloading of ballscrews without thread

    Hello,
I was looking for advice on how to preload ballscrews that dont have a threaded end on them? I was told by several sources that it can be done however I am failing to find good reference material on the site about how to do it exactly. My ballscrews are hardened so machining them on my lathe isnt really a viable options, and grinding threads in them is expensive. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    PS
these are going into a custom sherline 5000 mill conversion that I am doing so the preload need to be a lot.

use shims to push the screw in one direction against a bearing surface

Only the surface is hardened, grind it off in a lathe and then cut threads. you can also anneal the end with a blowtorch.
