    noise and vibration

    Hello Board

I have been cutting 2" x 3"x 1.5" pockets firmly mounted and secured in some 7075T-6 using a 2 flute / .375 Carbide endmill @ 3500 rpm with coolant, 19ipm feed and a plunge of 5ipm with minimum stickout..............although the speeds and feed calculator gave me more aggressive feed and speed, and because I'm not in a big hurry I ramped the feed and speeds down BUT I am experiencing more noise and vibration than I am comfortable with.

It is possible that I went too slow? What am I missing and how can I do it better please?

    Thanks all!

You dont say how deep and width of cut you are using.

    I would use 5000 rpm
    fllood coolant
2 flute is more noisy than a four flute, but it is good for pockets.
If you are getting vibration try a lesser doc or woc or both or a shorter cutter, long cutters are nice for visibility and clearance, otherwise the shorter the better.
If the cutter is a bit dull it will make more noise as well.
Its hard to tell whats the problem without all the parameters.
A Tormach lacks rigidity for heavy feeds and speeds so I adjust accordingly.

    Just some things to try.

1.5" is a lot of stick out for a 3/8" tool. Could you use a 1/2"?

In any case I run a 3/8" maritool carbide EM at 3400 with feeds around 38ipm in 6061 with a doc up to .375 and step over of .05" or so for pocketing. 19 sounds a little slow to me and carbide is liable to rub if it's fed too slowly.

I run my 3/8 end mill maxed out on rpm. HSM tool paths .5" deep X .05" step over At 60 ipm using a 2 flute hss. I finish max rpm at 30 ipm. HSMadvisor has not let me down yet. The only time I back off is deep slotting because I don't use flood cooling.

Chatter and vibes are always a challenge when doing deep cavities with small dia cutters. Yes I agree 1 1/2 inch is very deep for a 3/8 cutter. The needed projection length makes it floppy and you cant use optimum feeds and depths of cut, especially on a light mill like a Tormach, and the TTS makes it worse (a long distance down front the spindle bearings). There are many tactics that help, and sometimes you need to apply all of them to solve the chatter/vibes.

If this thread continues more and more helpful tactics will arrive!...good luck! keen.
