Fix Needed - Wrong Pull stud in SMTC

    Hey guys,

Long story short, we have a Mori pull stud in our Haas VF2 SMTC.

Is there an easy way to release the spring force that holds the ball bearings that retain the tool in the SMTC? Remove the cover, I'm assuming?

Or is there a way to get it to pull the tool down but not move in the arm to perform the change? I would guess in recovery mode and mash the ATC rev until its out of the way?

    Thanks,

    C

I have not worked Haas, but most machines have a valve for the un-clamp cylinder. Find it and force it. Old school fix.

By the looks of things there is no un clamp cylinder in the SMTC, just 4 locking ball bearings retained by a circular spring.

SMTC = Tool Changer? I don't speak Haas. I was thinking that you had it jammed in the spindle.

I assume you tried to take it out of the SMTC by prying with a large screwdriver as you can with the tools with the correct pull stud? Sorry if stating the obvious. Just making sure.

Yes, I did. I just don't want to break the pocket casting. Took a bit too much for me to be comfortable with it.

@ifixcnc, SMTC is the side mount tool changer.

For future reference to others this may occur to:

Remove the outer shield of the SMTC. Rotate your pocket so the tool you need to remove is at ~45 degrees from vertical. Remove the spring that holds the prongs in place, they are machined bullet-shaped parts, not ball bearings as I suspected, and they're shouldnt run away from you. Once the spring is off, its easy pickings to remove the tool. Reinstalling the spring is hard, but you can do it.

    Cheers,

    C

first go to tc restore and get the pocket with the tool in the tool change position. Then make the pocket go down. Now you can diconnect the spring with some needle nose pliers. The tool will come out. Be careful not to lose the little steel studs inside the pocket that actually hold the pull stud.
