Started working on a new plasma./router table a little while back. I will try to document some of it here, and answer any questions. I plan on using it for expanding my small metal working business and for fun. While planning this machine, there are a few main things I wanted. It has to be rigid, and fast.
This is what it should look like when completed. I designed it using autodesk inventor.

It is my second plasma table build, this time around I have retrofitted Sharp LMV knee mill to make many of the parts. Many of the parts are being reused, and much of the material was selected be cause I got it at scrap price. I will start will Mach3, a THC300, and a smoothstepper, I might upgrade to a kflop so I can use positional feed back. I am using 20mm linear rails and bearings from VXB, I designed it so one day I can upgrade the rails to bearing blocks to increase rigidity. The motors are NEMA 34, 1200oz/in steppers from Automation Technology Inc. The drive system uses rack and pinion. I'll be adding a water table with a holding take, in the not too distance future I'd like to add a router for wood, plastics and soft metals, and maybe one day a laser.
Test running the Y Axis, the design seems to be working.
