Help please with stepper motor driver setting and mach3 steps per

Hi, I’m new to the cnc world and would appreciate some help setting up my machine properly. My set up is as follows:

    DB25-1205 Break out board
    Nema 23 stepper motor model
    23HS9430B step angle 1.8 degrees
    Stepper motor driver--DM542A

    Questions:
    1. What should be my pulse / rev?
    2. What should be my setting in Mach3 steps per?

    dja9520,

Definitely not the authority on this, but what do you have your stepper motor driver microsteps set at? Also do you know the pitch of your leadscrews or ballscrews? Without those 2 pieces of information, it's hard to give you an answer. Once you have that info, you should be able to input your info into the excel doc on this page: STEPS PER UNIT CALCULATOR

How do I determine the pitch of the ballscrews? It takes 5 revolutions to move 1 inch.

Then the pitch is 0.2 inches. Do the steppers drive the screws directly or is there any pulley reduction?

The steppers drive the screws directly. The stepper drivers are DM542A and per the factory schematic pul/rev is on 1600. When I calibrate steps per in Mach3 it sets them at 6400. Thanks again Joe

What do you mean by factory schematic? And what do you mean by calibrate in Mach 3? With those screws you need 5 turns to move one inch, which is 1000 whole steps using 1.8 degree motor. So if you set the microstepping to say 16 on the dm542, Mach3 steps per unit will be 16000.

If the dm542 is set to 1600 pulse per rev and your screw is 5 rev per inch, then Mach should be set to 8000.

You can click on the settings tab and use Axis Calibration you tell it what axis to move and how far then it ask you how far it moved and it sets the steps for you
