    bit coatings

    Hello,

I'm new to CNC machining. While I was looking for bits to buy from amazon and ebay, I found out that there are many coating options for the bits.
I mainly work on wood, and thinking about working on plastic. What are the pros and cons of each coating? Does AlTiN Coated bits work for wood? If it does, is it much better of uncoated solid carbide bit?
If someone have a website for the Pros and Cons of each coating options will be great.

    Thanks,
    Sayed

    Re: bit coatings

Almost all coated bits are designed for metalworking. I'd avoid them, and look at bits specifically for wood or plastic.
    There are two exceptions.
    1) Often, tapered ballnose bits for 3D carving are only available in coated versions.
    2) Some manufactures do make coated tools for woodworking, but they are usually for compression bits and spirals designed for very high performance in abrasive wood products.
