    91TSiGuy,

Thanks for the super fast reply, I could use one of our donut hole cutters but it might not be good for food service afterwards.

Just a heads up, the shim material is about as thin as I'd go for these import disc cutters. Their side wall clearance is right at the point where the shim can become pulled between the cutter and hole. Using a sacrificial piece of sheet metal under the shim stock while cutting could help I believe ( perhaps above it--i can't recall what i read)

Te sacrificial part is where I see a real use for MDF on one off parts.

Thanks for the answer, I need to get in and shim my Z now, and seeing a non spring loaded double ballnut gives me confidence to try my own perhaps (I think X is the easy 1st try for me).

$25 in materials, an hour of time, and I have some make-shift chip containment.

Limit/homing switches wired up. Each axis got it's own input on the breakout board.

Rear Y switch, ends up covered by the bellows.

First useable part made with the conversion-- gas struts upper mount.

The upper mount is a bit too wide to swing the head from 90* to upright after bolting it on so I had to drop the middle bolt and only use the side ones for attachment. I thought cutting off the corners of the bar would work but it wasn't enough. Oh well, the gas struts are on.

A quick engraving job tonight to see how things would come out. Mach4 seemed to freeze with the one gcode can bam put out asking for a tool change pause. Not sure why-- I deleted the tool number and description and then redid the code. Worked as it should that time.

Re: Looking to pull the CNC conversion trigger

I'm trying to get the post processor to work with Fusion 360 but keep getting a failed output code. Here's what I'm seeing for a simple flycutting opperation, 2 pass, .020" deep. I have Mach4, but that's not an option of a post processor output, only Mach3. I'm not quite sure what else I'm missing here -

Thank you for a well-documented log, bud, will come in handy when I tackle the mechanical side on mine.

    Top effort, luv it.

I think I found the error with the above code. I disabled coolant in the setup options for each step and it looks to be good to go.

Re: Looking to pull the CNC conversion trigger

Made a little progress with the machine, but not as fast as I wish I could. I began mounting and running the oiling pump and lines and secured the limit switch lines, so basically there was a lot of drilling and tapping of cast iron.

I also hooked up my compressed air to some eBay nozzles and an old regulator to use for cooling and chip clearing. This required me to cut and reweld the mounting flange for the mills original flood coolant bracket when I wanted to move it to the left side of the machine.

Re: Looking to pull the CNC conversion trigger

Swapped out the temporary chip clearing air supply line with a slimmer coiled line.

I also made some progress with the oil supply lines for the ways and ballscrews. I'm not in love with how I think the ballscrew oil lines will work but I'll wait and see if they're an issue. The z screw oil line I still need to finish.

Last week I also bent up a table extension cover ala tormach style so I'm excited to mount that permanent.

Because why not be a cnc newbie and jump into 3d machining, ha! My cam definitely needs some work. The cross hatch look was intentional but the 3 notches on the side weren't.
