Job Description:
The Mechanical Engineering Lab Manager is responsible for the management and operations of the all mechanical engineering laboratories, the engineering shop, and the industrial and Systems Engineering Laboratories. Updates and maintains the Safety Badging Protocol Organization through Blackboard. Trains and supervises engineering students and student shop assistants in safe and efficient operations of machines, tools, work spaces, and software. Proactively manages, maintains, installs, improves, and repairs machinery, tools, and associated items. Develops, implements, and monitors safe and efficient shop procedures that meet internal and external regulations on a continual basis. Works closely with faculty and staff on training, operations, improvements, safety, and procedures. Assists with design projects from students and faculty.

Examples of Work:
- Manages and maintains the School of Engineering machine shop, wood shop, prototyping, welding, sheetmetal, mechanical engineering laboratories, industrial engineering laboratories, and student work areas.
- Supervises and trains students and student shop assistants on safe and efficient use of all shop machinery, tools, software, and work spaces.
- Assists with or may teach manufacturing-related labs, under the guidance of the lab instructor, including clear and concise student instruction on safe and efficient shop practices, machine operations, and shop professionalism.
- Provides safety badge training (via Blackboard software) to ensure students, lab assistants, and faculty follow safe lab practices.
- Provides technical support to students with class-related design projects.

Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Technology, Manufacturing Technology, or related technical discipline, with 2 years of relevant manufacturing and shop experience. OR: Associate’s Degree in a similar field with 6 years of relevant manufacturing and shop experience.
• Depth and breadth of skills with machine shop (CNC and conventional), wood shop, rapid-prototype, welding, sheetmetal, plastic, and metrology machines and equipment (not all are expected at hiring date). Proficiency with CAD, CAM, and MS Office software.
• Skill and experience in efficient machining, fabrication, and development of successful mechanical projects.
• Ability to advise students on complex mechanical design projects with knowledge of design for manufacturability, order of operations, material selection, tolerance selection, etc. Knowledge of basic principles of mechanics, design, and materials.
• Sound knowledge and ability to develop, apply, and enforce shop safety procedures for both students and faculty.
• Ability to troubleshoot and repair complex machinery and basic electro-mechanical systems.
• Excellent interpersonal skills. Clear machine instruction skills. Ability to interact effectively with faculty, staff, and students.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Technology, Manufacturing Technology, Technology Education/Pre-Engineering, Education, or related technical discipline, with 3 years of relevant manufacturing and shop experience. OR: Bachelor’s Degree in a similar field with 6 years of relevant manufacturing and shop experience.
• Journeyman machinist, master machinist, or equivalent experience.
• Prior experience managing a machine shop, instructional shop or lab, or similar environment.
• 5+ years’ experience with mechanical design, project development, and prototype construction, using metal, wood and plastic.
• Extensive experience with Blackboard online course management software.
• 5+ year experience teaching or training.

Hours: 37.5 hours per week. Monday-Friday
