Trying to do an extruded cut on a curved path

I'm trying to design a part for 3D printing. The part consists of 2 solids: a cone, and a hollow structure on the surface of the cone. Now I'd like to remove the cone wall underneath the hollow structure, to get one undivided internal space.

I initially tried to use the intersection between the two solids as my cutting path, but I couldn't get that to work. So I've created a 3D sketch (the blue lines in the image, 3Dsketch 17 in the attached part file). Despite several hours of trying every variation I could think of, Solidworks keeps giving me errors ('sketch contains an entity with unsuitable geometry') when I use this part for a cut-extrude.

    How should I do this?

surely to model as a solid would have been easier and then shelled it after ?

Would creating a new workplane and then a sketch on it, followed by extrude cut, would it not work?

This can be fixed by editing your combine to allow you do a cut extrude.

The neatest way to do this without re-drawing is to:
    - Combine all your bodies
    - Ignore you're 3D sketch, its going to make life difficult.
    - Insert a sketch into Plane 18
    - Select the Face you want to remove and Convert Entities. This will give you a profile which you can cut extrude with.
    - Cut-Extrude in two directions using Up to Next and Up to Surface.

As said earlier ideally if you had to do this again your best bet would be to create a simple solid cone + side geometry and use the Shell command.

    Thanks everyone for the pointers.

If I were to start with a solid body, I suspect I'd be moving the problem to the area just below my cut.

@Torque2004: thanks for the file, unfortunately I'm stuck on Solidworks 2010 for the moment so I can't open it. I all goes well I should have a more recent version available later this week.
