My screw thread appears to be buckled and I need to take it off. However it looks like the nut is locktited in and there is no obvious way to grip the thread, Any ideas? I have a wooden clamp so the best I can think of is to grip it with that.

Actually I think it might be a "lock nut" with that plastic insert. Better than nail polish I think I have answered my own question.
Sounds like they have used a vice to get it on so you will likely need a vice to get it off, it also sounds like a poor choice of nut.
Using a rubber glove to grip the screw when putting nuts on gives you all the hold to achieve all the torque requirement of the nut you need. Any more and your over tightening the bearing.
Using two nuts instead of lock nuts is a better way to go though I find a single nut with lock tight doesn't come loose.
