    Bloke need help

    Bloke-

I was looking at the older posts and found one that fixes my problem.

When I power up the MD1, it says that port 1 and port 2 communication tests fail.

you said to replace the MC1488 and the MC1489 IC. Which board, and how many?

    Thanks

The little RS232 board mounted on the CPU. There's about three of each on there if I remember correctly.

    Bloke-

I found the board. I am going to order the IC this weekend.

Does this board do anything besides communication? Can I take the working board from the MD3 and swap it into the MD1 ?

That is all it does. You can swap it.

    Bloke-

I swapped the boards, and everything works. I will order the IC tonight.

There is 1 set that is socket mount, and two sets are soldered in. Any reason for this?

I couldn't tell you why half are socketed and half soldered. Change the socketed ones first and if you still have problems, unsolder the others and change them. If you do have to change the soldered ones, add sockets for those too.

    Bloke-

I was finally able to order some of the chip from Digikey. I went to install them, but I have a question. Do I install them according to the writing on the chip, or the small black circle in the corner? I have attached pictures of the chips as they are installed in the Hurco MD1. I also have pictures of the new chip. I am not sure which way to turn them.

    Thanks

    Hi Steve

the notch is in between pins 1 and 14
(in this case the shallow circle is a mold mark)

    Attachment 316866

looking at the photo of the PCB
other ic's either have a dimple next to pin 1 or a bar across the pin 1 end

    Re: Bloke need help

    Ok

I have the port 1 and 2 working again. Yea!

Is there anything I should or shouldn't do to prevent this from happening again?

Can someone post a wiring diagram for the cable? I want to make sure the cable I made is correct. I am using the round hurco port to a DB 9 connector

    Thanks

    Hi Steve

RS232 port protection devices are available

without the circuit diagrams of the machines PCB's and wiring to the RS232 connector its not easy to determine how much needs to be done to protect the MC1489-D IC's you have replaced

you can use a ready made port protection device
for example this isolator - RS232 optical isolator for protecting serial RS232 connections
    - note this is for 3 wire connection TX , RX GND

or you could use a diy protection circuit from
    RS232 over voltage protection

    Attachment 317956

    Attachment 317958

diagrams shown are for 3 wire connection but can be expanded to protect hand shaking lines RTS and CTS

try searching the Hurco web site for the cable wiring details

    not sure this helps
Hurco Ultimax G-code file transfer or DNC

John. Thanks for all the help. I will get an isolater ordered.

    Re: Bloke need help

    Hi Steve

with the isolator make sure the version you order is the correct one for the Hurco machine

the 3 wire isolators ( TX, RX , GND ) are easy to find and not expensive

5 wire isolators for the Hurco data connection ( TX , RX , GND ,RTS and CTS ) are harder to find and a bit more expensive
the first one I found -

    John-

I talked to the person who sold me the USB DNC gizmo box that transfers the data from a jump drive to the Hurco.

He said that he would power his box from the hurco, instead of using an extension cord and separate outlet.

He said this would eliminate the need for the coupler. What do you think about this?

    Re: Bloke need help

    Hi Steve

with a USB DNC device powered by the Hurco machines power supply
the RS242 cable will be very short and will not need the opto isolator
I assume the USB DNC device can be powered by the +12V that would power a floppy or hard drive - that makes sense to avoid another power adaptor when you can

the isolator would only be needed for long cable runs that can pickup stray voltages and / or may be connecting the machines serial port to a PC's port at a different ground potential

    John-

It looks like it is working. I was able to transfer a small program. YEA!!!

    Ok. 1 more question.

How would I need to connect my laptop to the hurco ? Use an optical isolater? Or use the laptop on battery power?
