This is of the small spindle, it does not matter how big the same style needs to be similar design, to be effective, this has the added slinger on the front for even more protection

Thank you, I'm appreciated. I'm not a machinist but as a software developer I'm trying to understand how this seal works. If I'm not wrong oil/grease tries to get inside between the two part and this prevent the leak. Here the very stupid question comes. What if the room inside the labyrinth is full then what happens?

It is almost always clear, most machining centers, have an positive air pressure flowing through the labyrinth seal so they are not going to have grease or oil in them, a labyrinth is only to stop stuff getting inside, grease or oil if there is to much in the spindle bearings, it would slowly find it's way out, a spindle with oil mist, it will exit the spindle through the Labyrinth seal

The second piece in the photo where you have the arrow is not always needed, this just an add another element of protection, this can be recessed into a thicker Endcap also

This photo without the added piece inside, your spindle would fit inside where this piece was, with the labyrinth against the spindle shoulder then your bearing stack behind it

OK that's very clear. I thought the seal was to prevent the oil leak. Thanks.

The lathe is too small to drill a 250mm part but I managed it.

    The cone has been cut.

I dropped my cell phone and it seems the camera is damaged.

    Thanks Mark.

@ebrewste it is a perfect fit.

I think the shaft will be ready this week and ready for hardening next week.

I'd like to as for your opinion about pulley. What is the best pulley for this spindle? Teeth count and teeth module/pitch etc.

    Thanks.

Edit: Actually I'll use a high speed motor and will need a big pulley in order to get a 2:1 gear ratio to decrease the spindle speed. So forget about the teeth count question.

Poly-Vee runs quietest. Or do you need a toothed belt for rigid tapping?

How much run-out is acceptable in the cone?

10 um or so would be the upper limit in my mind. Lower if you plan on using small tools.

Don't forget you can grind the spindle when it is installed in the machine. Most people say this is not a DIY activity, but neither is making your own spindle, so you should try it

That is awesome!!!!! I would definitely go for something like that, I bet it makes a huge difference on part finish and holding tolerance as the video stated!

Just received the pulleys. The big one is slightly damaged but It's not a big problem.

    Re: BT30 Spindle

I've upgraded to Windows 10 however Solidworks won't work properly with that OS so I can't change the design. So I drew a quick labyrinth and want to ask for your opinion. Very simple and probably stupid design but my intention is to keep it simple however I don't want to build something useless so I value your opinions.
