    Stepper Motor problems

I am in the process of building my first CNC router. I am using an Arduino UNO with a CNC shield V3. I am using A4988 Motor Drivers and some NEMA 23 motors salvaged from a printer. The motors are running off of 24VDC. The Arduino is running GRBL 0.8c and I am using GRBL controller software and Universal GCODE sender.

The problem I am having is I can jog the motors, but sometimes they will randomly switch directions.I don't know what is going on.

That sounds like either a driver problem...or maybe a polarity issue with the motion controller...or something along those lines. But I could be wrong.

Hi, firstly, use the last version of GRBL. At this time, is 0.9j. This version is strongly better with smooth movement for motors and improved arc code...etc

I've exactly the same configurations but with the nema17 motors, and i also have a lot of problem with 0.8c version.

Secondly, check all yours wiring between motors/cnc shield.

Does it only do this when the router is running? If so, noise is the issue.
