Hello Mark. I've just got my workshop set back up after a good few years of not using the machines. I designed and am making a simple steam engine to help me get back into the swing of things.

I am just about to post another thread to show people the engine so look at the thread above this in a few minutes time!

What you want to make is an oscillating engine or wobbler as they call them in America for your first one. My design isn't the simplest you'll find but you could amend it to make it simpler.

I 2nd the PM Research 2A wobbler. I just finished building it :wave:and it ran the 1st time last nite. Here's a short video of mine running on compressed air :

This was my 1st casting kit that I actually started about 2-1/2 years ago. I got sidetracked for a while 2 years ago then started this kit again about 2 months ago.

When I got back to machining, I decided I'd be better off building an engine with bar stock so when I messed up, it'd be easier to remake a new part

I had purchased plans/DVD's for Rudy Kouhoupt's "Building a Small Steam Engine"

What a cool little project, learned some new (to me) machining techniques that I applied to the above wobbler. The video's show in great detail, Rudy building this engine on Sherline lathe/mill. It was extremely satisfying to see my engine run the very 1st time !! I finished this past Jan and it too ran the very 1st time Here's the vid :

I highly recommend this engine to anyone. Although I built mine on conventional-sized machines, it's perfect for desktop-sized machines.

on my busy bee 10 x 18, i used clear plexiglass for the body, and 1" hex aluminum for the cylinder. the flywheel is an old VCR head. it idles at about 30PSI, and screams at 110.... i forgot to mention, all the side holes were drilled on a $60 canadian tire drill press.
