    X axis brake

Two of or Our cnc lathes, a 1998 okuma crown/osp700l, and 1994 cadet/osp5020 both have problems with the x axis dropping at power off or estop, drifting down to the hard stop or against a wooden block if operator puts it there.

The last time a similar problem occurred, okuma service sold me a new motor.

Is there a serviceable electric brake on the motor?

    Re: X axis brake

Update if anyone is interested. . The 1994 machine has a brake that is external from the motor. Found a coupler had come loose and moved. Repositioned, tightened 2 setscrews. Problem solved.

1998 machine brake is part of motor assembly. Will Be Sending Out to local electric motor repair shop for evaluation when workload permits.

They have a tendency to get coolant mist build up on them and then slip because they are "greasy". A good cleaning will typically give you more life. Design was changed to internal to protect from mist.

Eventually they will wear out from use. Every time the e-stop is pressed or the machine is turned off the brake activates to keep the turret from dropping.

    Best regards,
Experience is what you get just after you needed it.
