You should remove the main brushes and tach brushes, if used.
It's an opportunity to blow the carbon out anyway.
You may need a puller to get the plate off, but usually it is not a super tight fit.
Make sure you check the end float when you have it re-assembled and increase or decrease the bearing shim washers as required to get virtually no end play, a little is better than too tight.
