    Amada NC ironworker servo problems

    Hi all-

I have an Amada NC IronWorker that I am having problems with the NC locator. If I jog the NC locator in manual, and press the jog button, let the locator move 1/2 to 1 inch, then release the button. The locator moves. If I try to go any farther, it jumps non stop forward, reverse, forward, reverse about 1-3 inches each way until I press the estop.

I have tried to contact Amada, but they are no help. For some reason this machine is not allowed in the US, and I have one. They are not happy. Long story.

    Anyway.

I am thinking it is either the servo amp, or the encoder. I don't have a way to test either. I have slowed the travel speed down using the parameters in the controller, and that helped some, but it is getting worse. It is almost unusable now.

About a year, year and a half ago, I had to replace several capacitors on the controller board.

There are several adjusting pots on the amp. They are NF---I-ADJ---GAIN---OS--- and DZ.

the encoder is a SUMTAK LDA-146-500.

    any one have any ideas?

    Thanks

    Steve

When the oscillations are that much, you have a problem with the tuning of the servo drive. I am not familiar with it, but every drive should have some sort of PID tuning.

It is worth checking though the condition of the brushes and the collector of the motor, also the mechanical connection between the encoder and the motor. There should be no radial clearance.

If this is a optical glass encoder, you could also have internal problems with it. Check for broken or loose glass there.

    LZ1TWB-

disaster has struck. While I have been trying to figure out the servo problem, the controller has died!! Not sure what I am going to do.

Those old industrial type of controllers have all kinds of safety precautions and are hard to kill in a normal situation.

What happened? I hope you did not unplug the motor while it was powered?

No nothing so dramatic. I had some plate to bend, so I turned it on. Nothing happened. The last time this happened the main board was bad.

I am trying to decide on repairing it or trying some sort of replacement.

    Lz1twb-
Good news. We found a loose wire on the power supply. Once that was fixed, we tried the servo. It worked.

    Thanks for the help
