    Ridgid tapping No.10-24 thread

    Hello,

Need expert advice on ridgid tapping a No.10-24 thread on stainless steel 316L my drill depth will be .5 deep my full thread depth needs to be .4 Im holding the tap on a ER16 collet holder but should be getting my ER16 collet holder with the square bottom tomorrow so the tap doesnt spin. We pecked it 4 times at equal increments our rpm was 180 and broke 2 taps in 3 holes...? Tap is a flat bottom tap for blind holes. Machine im using is a Mazak 510c-2 with the nexus matrix control which based on my serial number the machine is equiped with ridgid tapping capabilities. Anyone whos been able to tap successfully tap with this thread please chime in. Im using OSG HSS coated taps at 25 bucks a pop and 1000 holes to tap I need all the advice I can get. Thank you everyone in advance.

What are you using for tapping fluid? Try Moly D. Drill the hole oversize. Do not work harden the material when drilling the hole. I do not have luck with osg taps. Try emuge.

Moly D is definitely the way to go. Don't be afraid to try a roll tap either. We had great success roll tapping Inconel castings.

I've also had a lot of trouble tapping stainless. We ended up switching to emuge taps and reducing the thread % cut.

i would try roll form tapping but the tap would have to be a 10-24 bottom tap(1-2 thread lead) with a cobalt base material with ticn coating ---drill would be 11/64 diameter to cut at about 65% full thread to make it easier on the tap
the other thing that you could try is a high spiral flute design that would bring the chips out of the hole again a cobalt substrate and the ticn coating using a #23 drill .154 dia. again about 65% thread

I would definitely try a good quality spiral tap such as a guhring g3
