    Gerber 200 Dimension

I have a Gerber 200 that I still use. But I'm ready to upgrade to something newer. I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea what the cost would be and how hard it would be to just upgrade this machine with newer parts or would it be better to just look for something newer. And if its more cost effective to buy new what would you recommend. Thanks Bob

    Depends on the parts.

Steppers and control would be fine and relatively straight forward. If you want to change the drive or gantry then its more work.

I think it depends more on the value of your time, your budget, and your everyday needs (and why you want to upgrade). Maybe explain the what and why and you'll get some comments.

    Re: Gerber 200 Dimension

Thanks for the reply. There are a couple reasons why I'm looking to upgrade. The machine only runs on proprietary software, so to upgrade the software is expensive and I'm very limited on choices. Another reason is I had a couple problems with the machine and its very hard to find parts for it. I would probably not want to spend more than $6000.00 if I were to buy a newer machine. The machine is mostly used for private use not a business. Thanks Bob

OK so, let's break it down.

Tell us what's OK or not :

    Size?
    Gantry height?
    Accuracy?
    Rigidity?
    Speed?
    Spindle /router power?

Also what parts are hard to get, mechanical or electrical?

For $6k, your at a good territory for a kit like from cnc router parts. But you likely have a better frame already.

Replacing the electronics should be OK with enough work. Replacing the stepper motors (which I assume it is) is OK too and might even make the new electronics easier.

New mechanical drive (like new rack and pinion), replacing chain or belt components, changing the Z height etc are all more project specific.

Bottom line is if you are happy with the mechanics you'll be fine. I'm not a diy guy so I can't help but lots of people here can and have if you search.
