    Tapping Aluminum Pipe/Sideways drill press

    Hi All,

So I am a newbie at all this but I just started working for a new company and am trying to figure some stuff out. We are looking at wanting to tap 3/8 inch NPT threads on the inside of an aluminum pipe 6063 alloy. I have read that NPT threads require a lot of torque by design to tap and one website estimated the torque needed at 51in lb. Does that sound right? We were going to temporarily buy a drill press and turn it sideways to tap the pipe since its so long and there are too many to do by hand. Has anyone ever done this? If so what do you recommend? Anyone have any other ideas or products to consider?

    Thank you!

For a 3/8 NPT You might want to look into a " multi position tapping head with arm " they make some that will go horizontal, and they will have more control for depth on npt threads
