    Question How could I model this?

    I've been scratching my head confused as to how I'd go about creating this effect on a sphere for one of my projects. Has anyone got any ideas as to how I could go about this?

    Is that a machined effect? Just looks like the woods grain to me

    @ Jon.N.CNC It might be the wood grain effect. But I think I could still recreate something similar on rhino?

    I see, that would have likely been done with software like artcam or aspire, both have z level layering adjustment.

    Is this for a rendering, or do you want those markings to be part of the model? If you just plan to create an image as opposed to manufacturing the object, (though additive or subtractive means) then it's pretty simple to add a material to the object.

    ahh no sorry don't think it does.

    Modelling it as a revolve would give you 360 degree even layers. You could model a few of these with layers in different places, cut and splice together and use fillets to smooth the joins.

    I'm not sure in rhino but in inventor/360 you can create a 3D sketch and create splines around the sphere for the extruded 3D extruded sketch to follow.

    I need the markings to be part of the model, its going to be manufactured so the relief waves need to be physically in the model

    then just use a program like blender, or mudbox....
    or you can use 3dcoat...
    the hobby version I think 100..
    possible maya also can do it..

    meshmixer also capable to lay on surfaces this woodgrain..

    from technical view, you need groves actually

    that's why z brush, or 3d coat can make it effectively.. you define a kind of ""brush"" and draw on the sphere..

    btw, what is your plan to machining it? and of what? steel? aluminum, or plastic?

    I like the look of meshmixer, it seems like its got a mild learning curve. Would you be able to guide me to a tutorial or the specific tools and a little method I could use to do it on meshmixer

    heres some tutorial

    first create a ball, and ""bent surfaces""
    these surfaces representing the wood grain

    import as obj format in meshmixer

    in meshmixer they are separated objects..

    set sculpting tool to ""PINCH"" and start to draw a line along the intersection of the auxillary surfaces and the sphere..

    after the first line, turn off the plane visibility so you can go to next

    when you model the planes imagine the rings as closer to the tree core, they are smaller radiuses..

    make little odd them, not exactly radius.. if you know I mean..

    The combine the "Project" with "Offset Surface and "Loft the edges. Here is a quick example.

    Thats great TedKyte really helpful, if I was to do the opposite and instead of the waves going in, have them as a relief, what command would I use for the last step?

    Here is a better way, use 2 spheres, create your wave shapes and extrude them through both spheres.
    Split both the spheres with the surfaces, then split the surfaces with the sphere pieces, then delete the unwanted inside sphere surfaces and the unwanted outside sphere surfaces and it will join up as a closed poly surface that is machinable.

    That makes the relief pieces horizontal. If you want them normal to the original surface then use the first method with "Offset Surface" and make the direction outward instead of inward.
