    Sherline 50173 - Leadscrew

    50173 - Leadscrew, 18", CNC, X-axis (inch)

    Product #: 50173
    Price: $42.00

Forty two fscking dollars for 18" of threaded rod!

Does anyone know a cheaper source? This is just 1/4-20" threaded rod with a hole drilled and tapped right?

Feel free to use standard threaded rod for it. Get back to us when you realize that a leadscrew has certain quality standards that end up costing money.

We're talking about a Sherline. It's just threaded rod.

    The normal-travel (12"?) leadscrew is $19.
    50171 - Leadscrew, CNC, X-axis (inch) $19

The Y axis Leadscrew is the same.
    56160 - 2000 Mill Leadscrew, Y-axis (inch) $19

    There is also this
    67026 - Leadscrew, CNC, 24" (inch) $31.50

The 18" leadscrew for the extended bed, FORTY-TWO DOLLARS!!!.

    What's up with that?

In there defense "Roton" the manufacture of 1/4-20 leadscrew charges $18.00 per foot ($27.00 for 18" plus shipping) so forty two dollars is not that much of a markup.

So just order the stock from Roton, and take it to your local machine shop so they can turn it down on the end and drill it. I'm sure you'll save a ton of money...

    Andrew,

Please clarify - Would that be metric tonnes, short tons or imperial long tons?

Dont forget the taper to match the Sherline couplers ;-)

That's nothing that a little quick work with a Dremel and a carbide burr couldn't fix right up.

That takes time, time is money. Furthermore the taper wouldnt be very accurate and would slip and or break.

I never did like that design anyway. Easier to bore and thread the coupler and use all thread.

Actually - the Sherline threaded rod is also hardened... So its not just a simple piece of all-thread. However, I really think the area that needs improvement is the nut. It is pathetically undersized.. and they reailly need something like a nut 1" long with some better anti-backlash features. (like a dumpstercnc anti-backlash nut or something)

We retrofitted a few of these sherline mills for 3D printing to 1/4- 4 start, with dumpstercnc couplings, made a huge difference with speed and accuracy,

    Here's some info,,,,,,,,, Sherline Mill

Now that I look back, I think the original screws were Left hand, so this could be why they cost more?

The mills have much more room than the lathes.
